GET IT OUT OF THE WOODS.<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the toughest aspects in elk hunting is transporting that large carcass out of the woods. If you\u2019re really lucky, you\u2019ll drop it where you back your pickup to it, and after field dressing, drop the tailgate and load it up with half a football team. Many hunters unfamiliar with elk are amazed and concerned when they walk up to their quarry and realize how big it is.\u00a0 There are many ways to move your elk out of\u00a0 the\u00a0 woods. The toughest way is a to carry it out on your back . The book\u00a0 explores the different techniques to transport it. It\u2019s often said that the invention of the wheel changed the course of civilization. That\u2019s\u00a0 true, especially from the hunters\u2019 perspective. If you\u2019re handy with tools, you can manufacture a carrier that will accommodate 150 to 200 pounds. Be sure to\u00a0 equip it with brakes so you can stop forward motion when you\u2019re going downhill. (Very important.) Several models are available online and in sporting goods stores.\u00a0 I use a commercial model\u00a0 and have wheeled elk, deer and moose out of remote areas.\u00a0 Without the cart,\u00a0 I would have expended a great deal more muscle, energy, sweat, and tears. Transporting\u00a0 the meat out of the woods can\u00a0 lead to a serious health problem if you aren\u2019t in great shape.\u00a0 I know some folks who have hurt themselves physically, and tragically two of them died while attempting to drag an elk. I prefer the one-wheeled cart because it\u2019s more easily maneuvered in the woods, whereas a two-wheeled cart\u00a0 is best on a wide trail or a road.<\/p>\n

HUNTING STRATEGIES THAT WORK.\u00a0<\/strong> Every species has unique characteristics requiring techniques that fit with the quarry\u2019s behavior.
