WHITETAILS AT WEST POINT.   While working at West Point for 8 years as Forester  and Game Warden I often accompanied and assisted cadets on their deer hunts. Some of the hunts  were close to the Impact Area where 105 artillery rounds were fired into  the mountain . Once, while helping a cadet drag a deer out of the woods, we dragged it directly over a live 105 round. It was hidden under a blanket of snow and was a couple miles from the artillery range. I spotted it when the deer carcass brushed snow away from it. Fifty yards later, I saw another live round just inches under the cadets’  boot.. He was about to step on it.

PLEASE, PLEASE, SHOOT THAT BUCK!  While hunting mule deer in Wyoming I accompanied a nonresident hunter who hadn’t gotten his buck yet. I already had my buck and decided to ride horseback with him and  the outfitter. At one point the outfitter told us to keep riding along the trail since he needed to make a nature call. Presently I saw a giant buck bound out of cover and stop and look at us 70 yards away. The hunter just sat in his saddle and looked at it. I told the hunter to quickly get off his horse, and he did. The hunter stood there, aiming at the big buck, and hesitated. Unbelievably, the buck stood still. “Shoot!” I said. The hunter stood there quietly, still aiming at the buck “Good Lord, shoot,” I said again.. Still no shot. “What’s WRONG?” I almost shouted. “Why don’t you short?” He finally answered . ”That’s no deer,” he said. “That’s a bull elk!” Suddenly the outfitter   appeared, riding briskly around the corner after the buck had disappeared. “Didn’t you see that buck?” He said to the hunter. “It was a dandy. There aren’t many like it in the entire state of Wyoming!”
