Enjoy this brief look inside the book:

GET IT OUT OF THE WOODS.  One of the toughest aspects in elk hunting is transporting that large carcass out of the woods. If you’re really lucky, you’ll drop it where you back your pickup to it, and after field dressing, drop the tailgate and load it up with half a football team. Many hunters unfamiliar with elk are amazed and concerned when they walk up to their quarry and realize how big it is.  There are many ways to move your elk out of  the  woods. The toughest way is a to carry it out on your back . The book  explores the different techniques to transport it. It’s often said that the invention of the wheel changed the course of civilization. That’s  true, especially from the hunters’ perspective. If you’re handy with tools, you can manufacture a carrier that will accommodate 150 to 200 pounds. Be sure to  equip it with brakes so you can stop forward motion when you’re going downhill. (Very important.) Several models are available online and in sporting goods stores.  I use a commercial model  and have wheeled elk, deer and moose out of remote areas.  Without the cart,  I would have expended a great deal more muscle, energy, sweat, and tears. Transporting  the meat out of the woods can  lead to a serious health problem if you aren’t in great shape.  I know some folks who have hurt themselves physically, and tragically two of them died while attempting to drag an elk. I prefer the one-wheeled cart because it’s more easily maneuvered in the woods, whereas a two-wheeled cart  is best on a wide trail or a road.

HUNTING STRATEGIES THAT WORK.  Every species has unique characteristics requiring techniques that fit with the quarry’s behavior. In the case of elk, bugling and cow calling allow some very special methods  not possible with other big  game species.  This chapter is intended to present hunting scenarios, including all possible factors that may affect the elks’ response. After  considering all the information for each scenario, I’ve offered a number of options.
